Everything We Know About The PlayStation 4

There was a ton of information given to us last night during the 2-hour long conference. Today, there was a ton of information given to us after a bunch of interviews that the Sony execs gave. In interest of keeping our readers (and our writers!) updated with the latest information, we have decided to give everyone a list of what we know about the Sony’s PlayStation 4.

System Specifications

  • CPU: x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores
  • GPU: 1.84 teraflop AMD Radeon-based graphics engine
  • RAM: 8gigs GDDR5
  • HDD: Built-in, no storage numbers released but the word “massive” was used by Mark Cerny
  • Optical Drive: Blu-ray 6x/DVD 8x
  • Ports: USB 3.0 (no number released)
  • Communication: Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), WiFi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooh 2.1 (EDR)
  • AV Output: HDMI, Analog-AV out, Digital Output (optical)


System Details

  • No price was released nor any bundle/version details
  • Sony says they will be flexible with the system cost to stay competitive
  • The system itself was not shown because the design is not finalized yet
  • Backwards Compatibility
    • Cannot play PS1, PS2, or PS3 games
    • Streaming of older system games will be coming via Gaikai
    • Cannot play digitally bought PS1, PS2, or PS3 games
    • Will not be able to use game saves from PS1, PS2, or PS3 games
    • DualShock 3 will not work on PlayStation 4
    • PS Eye will not work on PlayStation 4 (must use new PS4 Eye)
    • PS Move will work on PlayStation 4 and new PS4 Eye but only with PlayStation 4 games
  • 3D is not a focus for PlayStation 4 games and media but will be available
  • 4K resolution will be available for media but not for games
  • Suspend/Resume feature to pause game and then go back to it without interruption
  • Improved background downloading using a seperate chip
    • Will allow you to download uninterrupted during gameplay or media playback
    • Downloads can continue will system is off
  • Instant Game Streaming
    • Using Gaikai’s technology you can stream games and downloads almost instantly
    • Download essential information first then head right into the game as it downloads to your system
    • Play demos instantly
  • PlayStation 4 will come bundled with a headset
  • PlayStation 4 will not block used games
  • PlayStation 4 will not require an always-on internet connection


PSN & PS Store

  • Two PSN profiles
    • Personal profile: only friends will see this, contains your real face, info, and name
    • Online profile: non-friends will only see an avatar and username much like the current PSN
  • Socially integrated with Facebook and Ustream
  • Uses the Share button on the DualShock 4
    • Upload screenshots, video clips, or stream live gameplay in real time
    • Schedule streaming sessions so your friends will know when to tune in
    • Can drop “gifts” into games to help a friend out with a potion or health pack in real time
  • Using social networks, purchase history, and gaming history the PS Store will recommend items you may like
  • Cloud features, streaming, and other network features using Gaikai technology will be released in phases starting on day one


Remote Play & Vita

  • Sony is targeting every PlayStation 4 to support Remote Play on the Vita
  • Sony is asking every developer to test Remote Play before submitting their games for approval
  • Remote Play turns the PlayStation 4 into a server to stream directly to the Vita
  • They showed Knack using Remote Play during the conference
  • No details on how controls fully work during Remote Play (ie. L2/L3, R2/R3, Share, Options)

Develop Support

  • PlayStation 4 is being supported by over 70 developer studios and publishers
  • Several developers were on-hand during the event to talk about the system and its capabilities
  • Many others were interviewed after the event by various outlets and talked about the system
  • Overall most developers are excited about the PlayStation 4 and what Sony is doing

  • Drive Club (10 years in developement, team-based racer)
  • inFamous Second Son
  • Knack (from Mark Cerny, PS4 system architect)
  • The Witness (from Braid creators)
  • Deep Down (working title)
  • New Final Fantasy game (being shown at E3 2013)
  • Watch_Dogs (releasing first on PS4)
  • Diablo 3 (also coming out for PS3)
  • Destiny (with exclusive PS4 content)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
