EA on Medal of Honor Quality Issues: “It’s An Execution Problem”

If you’ve noticed rather lackluster performance in recent Medal of Honor entries, you’re not the only one. EA chief creative director Rich Hilleman spoke to Rock, Paper Shotgun about Medal of Honor.

Hilleman believes that if EA gets the game just right, then Medal of Honor will have no problem finding a place in the market, specifically in the FPS market. According to Hilleman, “We don’t think it’s a genre problem. It’s an execution problem. We don’t think Medal of Honor‘s performance speaks to any particular bias in that space against modern settings, World War II, or any of that. It’s much more that we had some things we should’ve done better.”

Hilleman continues by commenting on the quality of leadership in the development team and how it didn’t really meet expectation. “I think a key part of this is having the right amount of high-quality production talent,” says Hilleman. “And we didn’t have the quality of leadership we needed to make [Medal of Honor] great.”

As for what’s next, a shift in focus to Battlefield is in the cards. Hilleman states that “what we think right now is that, for the next couple of years, we can just have one great thing in that space. So we’re choosing for it to be Battlefield.” For the time being, EA plans to put Medal of Honor in the back burner, so it’s a question of when, not if.
