With Zelda U and Wind Waker HD Coming, There’s No Hope For A Majora’s Mask Remake
Nintendo has been living in the sunlight, loving in the moonlight, having a wonderful time these past few days. Their onslaught of announcements on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 has brought a lot of attention to the Wii U. The 3DS has not been receiving the same attention lately. That’s okay, it doesn’t need it. The 3DS has been the top selling system for the last two months. The Wii U, on the other hand, laid dormant for a couple months after its successful launch.
But now, many good things are to come for the Wii U. Not one, but two Zelda titles have been announced. A lot of Zelda fans rejoiced upon hearing (or reading) the news. You have your Bitter Billies and Debbie Downers who don’t care much for Wind Waker being re-released. I, for one, never completed it due to only renting it for a few days. Wind Waker never drew me in like it did to many others, so I never felt the urge to finish it. But I’m a sucker and I’m going to purchase it, anyway. I have hopes that my tastes have changed since I was twelve.
With all this on the upside, there’s bound to be a downside. That lies with Majora’s Mask fans. With two titles coming to the Wii U, one of them being a remake, there’s not much room for a Majora’s Mask remake. Fans of the game have been speaking of it for quite some time now; probably since Ocarina of Time was carried over. There have been petitions made and even a wonderfully made fan trailer. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch.
When the 3DS came out, it was a sad, gimping puppy in need of nurturing. Ocarina of Time was able to provide that, and was needed to provide that. As stated above, the 3DS doesn’t need that now. Besides, Nintendo already announced a Zelda title coming to the 3DS over a year ago, now. It’s highly unlikely that it would be Majora’s Mask. Nintendo wouldn’t want to have their only 3DS Zelda titles being remakes. All this taken into consideration, hopes of ever seeing it ported to the 3DS are slim.
As for it coming to the Wii U, I find that even more unlikely. It would take much more work than a simple HD upgrade in order for it to fit the standards of the Wii U. Back in June, Nintendo talked about maybe remaking A Link to the Past or Majora’s Mask, but there was no mention of Wind Waker. I see that as a red herring used to get a bigger reaction when announcing Wind Waker. Shigeru Miyamoto’s statement about remaking A Link to the Past or Majora’s Mask can be found here:
I find it to be quite a shame. Out of the nine Zelda games I’ve completed, Majora’s Mask isn’t one of them. That’s not out of dislike. I got halfway through the game, lost it for two months and found it after losing interest to complete it. Plus, Majora isn’t necessarily an easy game to jump into halfway through without remembering anything you’ve done. Needless to say, it would be good closure for me. It seems that I, along with the Majora fan-base, will have to either stick with the N64 or go with a virtual console download.
What are your thoughts? Do you see a big return for what some fans consider to be the most underrated entry of the series?
