Dead Space 3 Dev: Micro-transactions Are “Optional”, Meant for “Instant Gratification”
When it was first announced that Dead Space 3 would be getting micro-transactions, fans went up in arms, declaring it a rip off and a travesty to have in-game purchases invade the experience.
Hoping to extend an olive branch and bring fans off the ledge, John Calhoun of Visceral Games spoke to CVG about the controversy and how it isn’t meant to be a pay-to-win option, instead providing a time-saving option to players as they make their way through the campaign.
Dead Space 3 has a strong emphasis on resource collection in order to make upgrades to Isaac’s suit or weapons. Of course, collecting resources takes time, and developers have enabled micro-transactions to provide a shortcut for those who don’t want to spend the time scrounging for resources.
“There’s a lot of players out there, especially players coming from mobile games, who are accustomed to micro-transactions. They’re like “I need this now, I want this now”. They need instant gratification. So we included that option in order to attract those players, so that if they’re 5000 Tungsten short of this upgrade, they can have it.”
He also cites that he and other developers of the game are more traditional gamers in the sense that they would rather take the time to collect resources a la old-school games than spend actual money in the game in order to get upgrades. Still, they wanted to provide the option in order to appeal to different audiences.
Dead Space 3 is the third in the standout survival horror franchise and sees the return of protagonist Isaac Clarke as he explores the icy planet of Tau Volantis in an attempt to discover the nature of the Necromorph outbreak. Look for it on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on February 5th.
