The Most Anticipated Games Of 2013

Being January, we really have no idea what is going to happen this year in terms of announcements. E3 is going to hold a lot of surprises and there are plenty of other chances for companies to announce, delay, or even cancel some titles.

Still, as we begin the new year it is fun to look forward to what is in store for us. To be honest, it looks like it’s going to be a fantastic year!

I surfed through all of the known games that are supposed to be hitting shelves and digital stores this year. I have picked the ten more anticipated of them and even list the others that I found to be worthwhile after them.

Let’s start with an often delayed space epic that every one has been waiting for…

Aliens: Colonial Marines

I’m really hoping that the suspense and scare factor here is pretty high. Colonial Marines pits a group against the dreaded Xenomorphs out in space. Being stuck something in space with an alien species that has no way to negotiate nor wants to is a scary thought. Sega has been working on this game for a long time and its going to finally make its release this year.

BioShock Infinite

Show of hands — who else was really bummed when this got delayed to 2013? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Infinite is looking amazing and with Ken Levine back at the helm the BioShock series is going to make a huge turnaround after the so-so reaction the second game received. I just wonder why I’m more excited about Elizabeth than I am the main character. Then again, I felt the same way about the first two games and their unimportant main stars.

Dark Souls 2

Are you ready to die… again? This ridiculous and challenging series is getting a new engine and improved gameplay. I’m hoping they don’t change much to it since I always felt Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls played extremely well. I could use a better sense of direction since they are keeping the same semi-open world format, though. I felt lost plenty of times in Dark Souls. I also wanted to break my controller plenty of times.

While Bungie has been quiet about this upcoming game, it has been years since they produced a title. I can’t see them not releasing Destiny in 2013. Waiting any longer will make their financials look as empty as Master Chief’s emotional spectrum. Still, Destiny is looking very beautiful in all of the concept images and fan-made trailers. I expect a huge showing at E3 with a release in November. With the way Bungie is touting Destiny’s “universe” and how the fans will interact with it, I’m thinking that we’ll have our minds blown.

The Elder Scrolls Online

When this first got announced, I thought it looked nothing like an Elder Scrolls game. In fact, I was very underwhelmed and disappointed. After more previews and interviews, I see how badly that announcement was. This MMO is going to be amazing, hands down. Bringing all the greatness of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim’s gameplay mechanics, world, and lore into an online setting is going to be fun to play. I may just get caught up exploring and finding stuff. After all, Tamriel is a magnificent place.

God of War: Ascension

The multiplayer beta seemed to do very, very well. That bodes well for ANOTHER prequel to the God of War series. With Ascension felling of Kratos’ initial fall and deal with the gods, we’re going to be in for a bloody, very bloody treat. Thankfully the multiplayer seems to be good to hold its own because this single-player campaign is likely to be amazing. I just hope this doesn’t prompt another HD collection release for the God of War franchise. They’ve had enough.

Grand Theft Auto V

How would this game NOT be on this list? GTA V just had a blowout of information in a Game Informer exclusive a while ago and everything looked and sounded amazing. While I’m sad that the character can’t be customized in the way CJ could be in San Andreas, it sounds like everything else Rockstar is putting into this game is going to be enough to make me not care much. I’m overwhelmed with joy that I won’t get a call while piloting a tank down a narrow alley from my cousin looking to play bowling. I like bowling, but not with him.

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic epic is looking great. The survival aspect of it against other survivors is what really gets me hyped about this. I love when games like this show how horrible the human race would get when faced with circumstances like this. Fallout has always peaked my interest due to that. Coming in contact with raiders, thieves, and general assholes due to the state of the world is an interesting thing. The Last of Us puts us in that situation but with a little girl’s well-being in our hands. This is going to get personal.

Tomb Raider

Ever since Uncharted came out, Tomb Raider and Lara Croft has taken a backseat. Not anymore, though! The reboot for Tomb Raider looks incredible and perhaps a bit too realistic. Lara’s torture, attempted rape, and abuse that we have seen has struck a chord with many gamers — and mostly in a good way. This is a highly anticipated reboot and it’s looking more and more that this will be the action-adventure game to beat in 2013. I just hope the multiplayer doesn’t get in the way.

Yes, I’m in that camp that believes Watch_Dogs will be out in 2013. I don’t have the same hope for Star Wars 1313 or Beyond: Two Souls but something hit me during Ubisoft’s presentation that told me this game will be ready. The fantastic guided demo of Watch_Dogs won E3 for Ubisoft and it will wow us all again at this year’s conference. I expect an October release and I expect that they will announce that it won’t be coming out for the Wii U. Why? This game is extremely detailed and I’m sure it is eating up a ton of time over at Ubi’s studios. I doubt they’re going to want to spend more time to port the game over instead of actually releasing it in 2013.

So there we have it: the ten more anticipated games of 2013. These aren’t the only big time releases, though. Let’s take a quick look at all the other titles that caught my eye during my searches.
