MMO The Secret World Drops its Subscription Model

The Secret World developer Funcom has dropped the game’s subscription model after a disappointing launch earlier this year and a bleak outlook for the company.

Those who buy – or have already purchased – the game will receive all of the title’s content free of charge. A $14.99 monthly Membership remains an option however and unlocks extras such as the ability to gain experience faster. Current subscribers will be automatically transferred to the Membership program.

In August Funcom revealed that The Secret World had only garnered 200,000 subscribers.

Earlier this year BioWare also shelved the subscription based model for Star Wars: The Old Republic after similarly poor performance. The Old Republic is rumoured to have been the most expensive game in history.
