Disney Acquires LucasArts, Targets 2015 for Star Wars Episode 7

The Disney Corporation piqued the interest of Nerdkind today twofold with the announcement that they are acquiring LucasArts and targeting the next official film in the Star Wars saga for 2015.

Disney’s Chairman Robert Iger spoke of the promise the merger between the two companies had, combining the passion and legacy of Lucas’ universe with the creative force of Disney and untapped potential now available to them and fans alike.

“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime,” George Lucas said of the acquisition. “I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.”

Among the litany of numbers and ideas thrown around within the official press release, probably the most intriguing and exciting news revealed alongside Disney’s purchase is the 2015 targeted release for the next film in the Star Wars saga, Episode 7. Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chairman of LucasArts, will be stepping up to take over as President of the company and will be the Executive Producer of the film and oversee its creation. The press release also cites additional films are on the way, all in an effort to build on the legendary Star Wars universe and broaden its appeal worldwide.
