“Easy Mode Often Ruins Games” Say Assassin’s Creed Developers
“A lot of games have been ruined by easy modes,” Assassin’s Creed 3’s lead designer Alex Hutchinson told Edge. “If you have a cover shooter and you switch it to easy and you don’t have to use cover, you kind of broke your game.
“You made a game that is essentially the worst possible version of your game,” he continued.
Hutchinson also lamented that video games are the only medium with an easy option: “it’s like if I picked up a book and it said, ‘Do you want the easy version or the complicated version?’ [Game designers] can simplify the language, you know; we can make it two syllables.
“We’re not trying to make a brutally difficult game, so we go through all the playtest data and make sure it works.” he concluded.
This comes after Borderlands 2 developer Gearbox revealed a Mechromancer skill tree that helps video game newcomers and is formally referred to as Best Friends Forever. The mode, though generally welcomed, was widely cricitised after it emerged that Gearbox developers routinely call it “girlfriend mode.”
Meanwhile From Software is reportedly considering installing an easy mode in Dark Souls, widely regarded as one of this generation’s most difficult games due to the title’s “fearsome reputation.”
