Konami Screws 360 Buyers, Falls Off The Rocker

I haven’t had too many issues with Konami over the years, to be honest. I’ve enjoyed Metal Gear and Castlevania. I wanted more Zone of the Enders and I’ll get it. The only things I can think of off the top of my head that irk me are Metal Gear Rising, shutting down the MGO servers, and taking so long to come out with MGS4 trophies. Aside from that, Konami’s been pretty pleasant to deal with.

You hear that guy? He said Konami is patching up the terrible Silent Hill HD Collection for the PS3 and not the Xbox 360. AND! They’re going to keep on selling it despite no patch. Hah.

Wait a minute… that’s actually happening!? You’ve got to be kidding, Konami! How can release a game with the technical issues that Silent Hill HD Collection had, take this long to release a patch and NOT patch it for a console that it sold/sells on?

I just can’t understand this. It is mind-boggingly stupid. There is no other word for it other than stupid.

The reasoning behind this is that Konami doesn’t have the resources and they couldn’t get around more technical issues. My question to that is: how could a fix by harder to… you know, fix… on a 360? The machine has been lauded as one of the easiest to code and build on. The PS3 has been constantly called frustrating. I’m not trying to knock consoles now. I just can’t understand how this is harder to fix on the 360. I think the harder thing to think about is how a major company like Konami just ups and quits on a much needed patch. Silent Hill HD Collection didn’t sell that much better on the PS3 to warrant just leaving it in the dust. Silent Hill is also one of the developers leading franchises. It’s a big deal in gaming and a pioneer in the survival horror genre.

Leaving the 360 edition to play like a mess is apparently an alright selling tool, as well. Well, it better be, because Konami is still selling the 360 version regardless. That, my friends, is beyond stupidity. Now they’ve basically slapped every buyer of the 360 version in the face and any future shmucks that don’t read gaming news that may see this game during Christmas sales or something similar and buy it.

I can only hope that retailers get a clue and realize how bad for business this is and not stock the damn game. If Konami is the only one finding this an okay business practice, than that’s who we blame. If GameStop and BestBuy keep the 360 version of Silent Hill HD Collection on their shelves, then they are just as bad as Konami.

I can’t even fathom what went into this decision.

Exec: “You’re having an issue with the 360 patch?”

Dev: “Yeah, we’ve tried like 10 times but it just won’t work. Should we start over?”

Exec: “Hmm, how many units did we sell on both systems?”

Dev: “About 0.7 million on the PS3 and 0.4 on the 360.”

Exec: “The 360 doesn’t matter. Scrap the patch, stop working on it, and issue a 2 sentence reason to the game blogs. Tell customer support to cancel vacations and order them some Monster energy drinks. It’s going to be a long week.”

Konami, come on guys. Even you must know this is ridiculous. You aren’t EA. You don’t operate Origin. You aren’t Bobby Kotick wannabes. Don’t start acting like it. Trust me, you don’t want to join that club. I hear the internet hate machine revving up. Move out of the way of it and fix the 360 version of Silent Hill HD Collection.

Cue the online petitions in… 3 …. 2 … 1 ….

Finally, here is a copy/paste of a customer support response to a poster from the GameFAQs Silent Hill HD Collection 360 board about this:

We understand your frustrations at having waited so long for an announcement regarding the patch for the XBOX 360 version of Silent Hill HD Collection. We are unable to issue refunds, and unfortunately due to technical constraints we simply will be unable to patch the XBOX 360 version and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
