Valve’s Source Filmmaker Hints at Source 2 Engine

Hidden deep  within the depths of Valve’s Source Filmmaker files, a recent discovery in the coding unveiled that the program hints at a forthcoming Source Engine 2 from the company.

One of the indicative lines of code reads as follows: “Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2′”.

The engine has undergone various updates over time, but Valve has teased a next-gen version of their legendary Source Engine before on their own site by promising that “it’s about to get even better.” Could this finally be it? Will this be the engine that delivers the long-awaited Half Life 3 (or Episode 3)?

No official announcement has confirmed this, but it seems a little more than likely the company is working on it. The Source Engine first debuted in 2004 and has been used to power all of Valve’s games since Half Life 2.
