Michael Fassbender to Star in Assassin’s Creed Movie
Fresh off of a starring role in “Alien”-prequel “Prometheus,” Michael Fassbender has signed on to star in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie.
Variety reports that Fassbender will also co-direct the project, which will be produced by the newly-minted Ubisoft Motion Pictures studio. It has yet to be confirmed if Fassbender will portray longtime series protagonist Desmond Miles or another character.
This may not seem like a big deal, as it’s only one actor, but Fassbender’s popularity is rising like crazy. He’s already played Magneto in “X-Men: First Class” (and will do so again in the sequel), starred in the afore-mentioned “Prometheus,” and is generating early awards buzz for his upcoming “12 Years A Slave.” A name like that on the marquee for Assassin’s Creed, coupled with Ubisoft’s hands-on in-house production strategy, could mean big things for video game movies in general. The genre has struggled when movie studios try to adapt a game to a movie, but this is the first time we’ve seen vice versa. If this experiment works, then the overall quality of video game movies could skyrocket.
I only have one questions: I wonder if the Assassins are able to bend metal like Magneto…
