The Lighter Side of Lovecraft: Cthulhu Saves the World now on IOS

There’s little to no comedy in the Cthulhu Mythos. Cthulhu is prophesied to rise from his sleep under the sea in R’lyeh when the stars are right, an event that signals the end of the world for humanity and the rise of the Old Ones. Survivors will be eaten, enslaved or driven insane for the fun of it. But what if a meddling sorcerer cursed Cthulhu, causing him to lose his powers and thereby preventing him from being able to bring about the end of the world? What if he had to become a true hero before he can break the curse and get his powers back? Well then you’re playing Cthulhu Saves the World.

Old school 16 bit graphics help this game’s retro RPG feel. The game plays on other tropes of the RPG genre, like the NPC’s that have no important information but that you still can talk to. Combat is well done. Particularly fun is Cthulhu’s special Insanity attack, which can reduce enemies to sludge while making his attacks more powerful.

Cthulhu never loses sight of his goal though. He only wants to become a true hero so that he can gain his full powers back and end the world like he was supposed to. But by the time he finishes his journey, will he still want to destroy the world after all? (My gut says probably.)
