The Top Gamers on Youtube

To the uninitiated, watching someone play a video game on Youtube instead of actually playing it seems preposterous. On the contrary, I’ve found that watching skillful video game commentary on Youtube allows me to further immerse myself in a game. The following gamers on Youtube are perfect examples of how skillful commentary can not only be as entertaining as actually playing a game but also grow one’s enthusiasm about a game by introducing the viewer to a whole community of like-minded gamers, starting with the commentator.

Husky Starcraft

One game that lends itself to mass broadcast and commentary is Starcraft 2, and Youtuber HuskyStarcraft is one of the best in the business. Husky provides incredibly informative, accessible, and often witty commentary on professional Starcraft 2 matches, allowing the user to learn the nuances of Starcraft as if it is truly a sport. Husky makes it very easy to lose yourself in the endless pit that is hardcore Starcraft, and after watching enough Husky, it will be easy to understand the wealth of jargon that is heard in the professional realm.

This FIFA commentator’s name is as ridiculous and extravagant as his personality (and don’t ask me how to pronounce it). His over-the-top commentary on all things FIFA provides for more entertainment than information, but is fantastic to watch all the same. He runs several weekly or semi-weekly series, such as Top Goals of the Week, Road to Division One, and various live-streams playing with his fans. Ultimately, his personality shines through in his videos, and his enthusiasm for EA’s FIFA soccer games is infectious.

Tobygames, a secondary channel of famous youtube personality Toby Turner, documents Toby’s escapades through various games such as Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the flash game Happy Wheels, and many more. Toby Turner is a very polarizing personality, his style very distinctive. His commentary is not as heavily produced as KSIOlajidebt’s often is, instead it is often stream-of-consiousness rambling, that commonly goes on long tangents that have nothing to do with the game being played. Nevertheless, Toby is entertaining and has a very loyal following, on both this channel and his main channel.

Rooster Teeth

Rooster Teeth, the company famous for their Halo machinima series Red vs. Blue, maintains a prolific Youtube channel with over 1.1 billion views to date. They produce several weekly series’, such as Let’s Play, where a group of people play a recently released game together, This Is, in which they show people how to get the hardest achievements in new games, and my personal favorite, Rage Quit, where one man documents his rage while playing various games. Their videos range from instructional, to news coverage, to pure entertainment.
