Kingdoms of Amalur Developer Closes, Lays Off Entire Staff
Things aren’t looking good for 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. The studio, founded by ex-MLB star Curt Schilling, had big expectations for their new IP, but a number of financial woes were too much to overcome.
First reported on Joystiq and soon picked up by a number of major outlets, it seems all but confirmed that both 38 Studios and Big Huge Games are DOA. We knew the studio was having money problems, and after defaulting on a $75 million loan to the State of Rhode Island, the higher-ups have decided to close up shop.
MPRI.com reported they obtained an internal memo from 38 Studios, saying the following:
“The Company is experiencing an economic downturn. To avoid further losses and possibility of retrenchment, the Company has decided that a companywide lay-off is absolutely necessary. These lay-offs are non-voluntary and non-disciplinary. This is your official notice of the lay-off, effective today, Thursday, May 24th, 2012.”
“The Company has decided-“ That sounds ominous. It looks like the State of Rhode Island will take control of the Kingdoms of Amalur IP, of which an MMO was supposedly in the works, so the future of the franchise looks pretty dire.
