Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Seems Legit, But Who’s In?

So it seems that the rumored fighting game starring Sony characters might be true after all, if recent events are any indication. Not only did Sony register two domains, www.playstationallstarsbattleroyale.com and the shortened www.playstationallstars.com (neither of which do anything at the moment), but GameTrailers TV is advertising a huge reveal via Geoff “Ryan Seacrest of Gaming” Keighley’s Twitter.

Not hard to put two and two together here, but why reveal it now with E3 barely a month away? Why not save it for the show? Is Sony that worried about something to be shown at E3 that they feel they need to get the jump on it, with God of War: Ascension, this, and another announcement rumored for May 2nd? Or do they have something so crazy that these reveals are merely the tip of the PlayStation iceberg?

Putting aside that speculation for a second, another question comes to mind. Who’s going to be in the game?! There’s a rumored list in the wild:

Kratos (God of War)
Parappa the Rapper
(Parappa the Rapper)
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper)
Fat Princess (Fat Princess)
Colonel Mael Radec (Killzone)
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal).

Interesting, and even if these are correct, there are bound to be more inclusions that these magnificent seven. You know what that means…

SPECULATION TIME!!

Co-head of Leviathyn Ron Hoffecker was on the right track with his Microsoft vs Sony fighting game article a while back, so I’m going to borrow some of his choices, but as this is a Sony-only fighter, all of those Microsoft slots can be filled by other Sony mascots. LET’S DO EET.

RUMORED INCLUSIONS:

Kratos
Nathan Drake
Parappa The Rapper
Sly Cooper
Sweet Tooth
Colonel Mael Radec
Fat Princess

– A nice mix of characters, but I feel that some either shouldn’t be there (Fat Princess) or are better served as unlockable or DLC characters (Parappa). Granted, the DLC/unlock idea obviously still means they’re in, but it also means that Sony would wait to reveal them. So, to start off on my list, I’m going to remove Fat Princess and separate main roster from unlocks/DLC, starting with the rumored list:

MAIN ROSTER:
Kratos
Nathan Drake
Sly Cooper
Sweet Tooth
Colonel Mael Radec

UNLOCKABLE OR DLC:
Parappa The Rapper

RON’S LIST (not including above):

Clank (Ratchet & Clank)
Cole McGrath
(inFamous)
Daxter
(Jak & Daxter)
Jak
(Jak & Daxter)
Nariko
(Heavenly Sword)
Nathan Hale
(Resistance)
Ratchet
(Ratchet & Clank)
Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)
Sir Dan
(Medieval)
Tifa Lockheart
(Final Fantasy VII)

– Cole, Ratchet, Jak, Sackboy, Nathan Hale, and Nariko are all main roster material. Each one is the head of a successful franchise, whether it has multiple games or just one. An argument can be made about Nariko as an unlockable, but Heavenly Sword is a fantastic game and one of the most highly underrated titles on the PS3. If you’ve played it, you know why she belongs here.

– Ron had separated Jak from Daxter and Ratchet from Clank, but here I feel like it’s a waste of two slots. Even though both of them had their own games, Daxter and Clank are better suited working with their more able partners in a game like this. I would think that each of them would figure into their respective partner’s special move arsenal. As such, I’m going to combine both pairs into one slot and stick them on the main roster.

– Sir Dan is a perfect unlockable, as Sony would be making many fans happy by reaching into their back catalog. He’s a knight for cripes sake, he belongs for sure.

– As this is a Sony game, third parties characters are big unknowns, so I’m staying away from them for this list. Even if third parties were included, I feel like Square would produce a different Final Fantasy character than Tifa, despite her bare knuckle style, so she’s out.

Let’s recap where I stand so far:

MAIN ROSTER:
Kratos
Nathan Drake
Sly Cooper
Sweet Tooth
Colonel Mael Radec
Cole MacGrath
Ratchet and Clank
Jak and Daxter
Sackboy
Nathan Hale
Nariko

UNLOCKABLE OR DLC:
Parappa The Rapper
Sir Dan

That’s a roster of thirteen, which isn’t bad for a first-time fighter. However, I’d like to think Sony will try to stuff as many fighters into this as possible. For my list, I’m going to 20 fighters: 15 to start, 5 unlockables. That gives me four main roster picks and three unlockables left to prognosticate. Here’s what I’m thinking:

REMAINING MAIN ENTRANTS:
Emmett Graves
(Starhawk)
– The game will be out soon, and it looks like it will be another excellent PS3 exclusive, so it would make sense to give the new series extra exposure by adding Emmett.

Wander (Shadow of the Colossus)
– One of the greatest games ever needs representation, and unfortunately the other stars of the game are just too damn big to fit into this fight. Wander would have his sword, bow, and even his horse if he needed it. He’d be well suited for a brawl.

Joel (The Last of Us)
-Same reasoning for Joel as I had with Emmett: The Last of Us is a high-profile exclusive coming soon to the system. Not that it needs extra spotlight with a dev like Naughty Dog, but every little bit helps. Also, Drake vs Joel in the Battle of Naughty Dog, what’s not to love?

Gabe Logan (Syphon Filter)
-This is a great example of an old character who deserves some new screen time. Syphon Filter is an excellent franchise despite some underwhelming titles in recent years. Hell, the original Syphon Filter alone should make Gabe qualify.

REMAINING UNLOCKABLES:
Buzz (Buzz Quiz Show)
-This smarmy little English bastard would be the perfect annoying fighter with quiz-themed moveset and plenty of backhanded comments. If Capcom can make Phoenix Wright work, Sony can make Buzz work.

Blasto (Blasto)
-THROWBACK! Batman face with long blond locks and a penchant for the ladies, Blasto is a old and highly entertaining PS1 exclusive from the good ol’ days. The only problem here would be the need for a new voice actor, as Phil Hartman unfortunately is no longer with us.

Retro Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot)
That’s right, I’m talking PS1, Cortex Strikes Back-looking Crash, the classic 3D platformer that carried the system in the beginning years. He could bring his sister Coco, the mask Aku Aku, and even Dr. Cortex with him. I’d play as Retro Crash every time, no question.

To close, here is the roster I came up with:

MAIN ROSTER:
Kratos
Nathan Drake
Sly Cooper
Sweet Tooth
Colonel Mael Radec
Cole MacGrath
Ratchet and Clank
Jak and Daxter
Sackboy
Nathan Hale
Nariko
Emmett Graves
Wander
Joel
Gabe Logan

UNLOCKABLE OR DLC:
Parappa The Rapper
Sir Dan
Buzz
Blasto
Retro Crash Bandicoot

Not a bad selection, for sure. If it’s missing anything, it’s major villains like Doctor Nefarious (Ratchet and Clank) or some other well-known names from already represented franchises, for instance another Twisted Metal representative (Calypso perhaps?).

There’s nothing like a new fighting game to get the creative juices flowing. I love trying to figure out who’s in and who’s out of a new game. At least now I have something to think about until the new Smash Brothers is made official and I can start my campaign for Little Mac.
