Tetsuya Nomura Interested in Marvel and Star Wars for Kingdom Hearts 3
With the Marvel comic book universe and Star Wars series under Disney’s belt, it was natural for fans to question the possibility of both franchises appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3, the Disney-inspired RPG by Square-Enix.
When Tetsuya Nomura, the game director for the Kingdom Hearts series, was interviewed by Finaland about those newly acquired franchises showing up in the latest game, he had this to say:
Of course it would be great if we could add those licenses as well. But there are lots of rules and restrictions by Disney so we can’t actually put everything people want, so it’s a quite difficult decision but we’re gonna prepare some surprises for you so, just wait for the information.
Nomura later expressed his initial excitement over Disney buying the Star Wars franchise, but stated again there are a lot of restrictions on what they can and can’t put in the Kingdom Hearts games.
While it’s encouraging to hear that Marvel and Star Wars aren’t entirely ruled out from showing up in Kingdom Hearts 3, the likelihood of them appearing in the game aren’t exactly high. Presumably, the restrictions Nomura was talking about deal with getting approval from Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm and agreeing on what gets interpreted from each series. Still, given the large anticipation built up for Kingdom Heart 3, there’s a good chance Disney will use the game to further capitalize on the Marvel and Star Wars brands. And with Kingdom Hearts 3 still early in development, there’s plenty of time for Disney, Square-Enix, Marvel, and Lucasfilm to work out a deal.
In any case, there’s certainly a better chance of Marvel and Star Wars appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3 than The Lone Ranger, given its disastrous theatrical debut.
