Quick time events: are they a useful gaming mechanic or unnecessary pain?
The Kinect Is A Glorified Microphone
Mass Effect 3, Madden 13, FIFA 13, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the list goes on and on with games that use the Kinect just for voice commands. None of these games use the Kinect for the motion. Even Microsoft’s own people at the briefings mostly use the voice commands. We may see one small Live Arcade game use it but that is about it for E3. What does that say about their most pushed product?
Kinect has been the number one focus for Microsoft at E3 since its reveal. Every year we get more and more Kinect and less and less games. This year we saw almost a quarter of the media briefing used up to show off Bing and new dashboard features. Granted, I’m excited about NHL coming to my 360 but do these features really need all this time taken up? E3 is a games show. The biggest games show in the world. Microsoft is treating it like CES. Announce the new apps and move on. We don’t need you to stand on stage and say, “Xbox… Bing me some crap.”
In fact the only games that really got attention were Halo 4, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 6, Dance Central 3/Usher Time, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The rest of them like Forza got a fleeting trailer and woosh, on to more Kinect.
If I’m not mistaken Halo 4, Resident Evil 6, Tomb Raider, and Black Ops 2 were the only games talked about with no mention of the Kinect at all.
It is obvious where Microsoft’s future lies. In entertainment, hand swipes, and voice commands.
