Recent Pokemon X & Y 4chan Rumors Debunked
It’s the moment you were all waiting for, everyone. It looks like the infamous “Mr. XY” has finally outed himself as a phony. For those of you that haven’t been keeping up, an anonymous 4chan user had been periodically throwing falsified information regarding the upcoming Pokemon X & Y games up on 4chan’s /vp/ board for the past few weeks, claiming to be someone with access to the game information that has yet to be officially released by Nintendo.
Now I would like the opportunity to clarify a few things for you, my dear readers. As a video game journalist, it is my duty to report news about video games, which, in case you were unaware, involves covering potential rumors about upcoming games. In this particular situation, someone claims to be leaking information about something, but we cannot label said information as the truth until we receive confirmation from a reliable source (i.e. Nintendo or Game Freak). That’s how the news works. Information cannot move up from rumor status to legitimate news until we receive official confirmation.
Contrary to what “Mr.XY” said in the above image, we did not label the information he gave us about Pokemon X & Y as anything more than a rumor at any time. We did, however, give that information to you.
“But why, Ray? Why would you give us information that you aren’t certain to be true?”
I reported on Mr. XY’s information for a number of reasons. First and foremost, even though the information did not come straight from the mouth of Nintendo or Game Freak, we could not have possibly known that it did not come from them at all, and thus Mr. XY’s information was dubbed a rumor. For all we knew, he may very well have violated his nondisclosure agreement to present us with all of that information, but we couldn’t know for certain if it was true until either he came forth claiming it to be a ruse, or Nintendo released more information about the game. Secondly, I like rumors. They get everyone excited about this great upcoming game that everyone wants to play. All aboard the hype-train!.
What it all boils down to is that I want to give you as much information as possible, but I will always tell you whether or not something is known to be factual.
I just wish he had spelled our name correctly.
