Wii U: The Little Console That Could

Don’t count the Wii U out of the eighth generation of console wars just yet. It would seem that Nintendo has gotten itself together and can breathe again thanks to the awesome, yet somewhat underestimated power of their exclusive titles.

During its 2014 fiscal second quarter, the Japanese video game company reported an approximate profit of 9.3 billion yen ($86 million dollars). Impressive, considering the reports from the same time last year showed a loss of 18 billion yen ($166.4 million dollars). Wii U sales played a pivotal role in the profit increase for Nintendo. In just a six month period, the Wii U system has sold 1.1 million units according to the company, more than double the abysmal total sales at the same time last year.

This year is different to last year, when we headed into the year-end without momentum or good software prospects. The goal is fully achievable.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata credited the sales increase to Mario Kart 8, which hit overseas stores in May earlier this year. The newest Mario Kart has accounted for nearly one third of the total software sales for Nintendo and with other exclusive titles like Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, these numbers should only improve.

You don’t think Luigi’s “death stare” was Nintendo’s way of enticing gamers to buy a Wii U, right?
