Sony vows to work on PlayStation Network Digital Download Problems
If you played Grand Theft Auto V during it’s launch week on the PlayStation 3, then you might have noticed some download and installation issues from the PlayStation Network. The most famous of which was error code 80029563 that popped up during several 18GB downloads. There were also reports of other issues with the PSN version including the fact that because it is played using the PS3′s hard drive instead of using both the disc and HDD, the PSN version of GTA V is the weakest in performance terms.
Sony is aware of the complaints and the fact that in order to insure the PSN’s viability during it’s next-gen console launch that the network itself must have a steady and reliable infrastructure. In an interview with Eurogamer, PlayStation UK head Fergal Gara acknowledged the problems that the PSN had and vowed that the company was working hard to solve the problem so that consumers who purchased the PlayStation 4 wouldn’t have the same issue.
“First of all, it is definitely going to grow as a means of consumption,” he said. “And there are big innovations in the PS4 to make it more attractive and more easy gamer wise to want to download.
“The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don’t need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file – I think it’s cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it.
“[Downloading games] is still a relatively tedious process. We’ve done a lot of work on pre-delivering files. It’s not perfect. It’s not seamless.”
Gara went on during the interview to state that PlayStation 4 developers may even begin testing digital games on the console before release to prevent the same problems from arising.
“The file version of the game versus the disc version of the game maybe needs to go through additional QA and additional testing,” he said.
“Some of the problems have occurred on older machines, which of course when you go into the next-generation you at least get to reset and start again and everything’s the same age and new. That helps.
“But it’s a major area of focus. It’s a major area of investment. The network will perform better on multiple levels, because it becomes not just a sales or gaming delivery but, increasingly, a social network.
It’s good to see that Sony is so focused on fixing the problem that may be to late for GTA V but could be a major issue when talking about the PS4. With the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releasing so closely together any slight issues with either console could sway sales in the other’s favor when talking about casual gamers. But Sony seems to be on the ball where their digital downloads are concerned making it clear that their taking the issue and gamer complaints very seriously.
