Mega Man Creator Launches Kickstarter for Mighty No. 9
In a move that has fans cheering worldwide, Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune has launched a Kickstarter campaign for an all-new game created by an “all-star team of Mega Man devs.”
Called Mighty No. 9, the game is a 2D sidescrolling action platformer that “takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics” and combines them with modern sensibilities to create an experience that is both “fresh” and “amazing”.
Mega Man purists will be happy to know that the game’s entire premise is not much more than the original Mega Man concept with idea twists to both modernize and distance itself from the Capcom darling enough to prevent the publisher from slapping a Cease & Desist order on the campaign.
In Mighty No. 9, players will take control of Beck, the ninth in a string of powerful robots that has somehow managed immunity against a virus that has machines all over the world going “berserk.” The current plan is to have players work their way through six levels (which the creators cite could be extended thanks to stretch goals) as they jump, shoot, and steal abilities from the enemies and bosses they defeat in order to transform No. 9 and use the newly-acquired powers in the game. Sound familiar?
Mighty No. 9 is currently slated for a Spring 2015 PC release on Steam, although creators also say that stretch goals could see the game released on other platforms as well. At the time of this report, Mighty No. 9 has currently earned $213, 331 of its $900,000 goal. Those who back the project will be able to keep up with the devs during the creation of the game and earn a variety of rewards ranging from a digital copy of the game to the $10,000 reward of having dinner with Keiji Inafune himself.
