Aliens: Colonial Marines Sold Over a Million Copies
In one of the more interesting news stories this week, SEGA’s financial earnings report cited that Gearbox Software’s Aliens: Colonial Marines managed to sell 1.31 million copies since its release back in February 2013.
Oddly enough, the game has been widely criticized as being one of the worst games to release in 2013, with complaints running the gamut from poor AI and quality assurance to accusations of false advertising on the game’s quality and development teams.
Still, as we saw with the surprisingly good sales of Activision’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, there’s something to be said for the power of brand recognition when selling a game to the general public.
Along with the success of Colonial Marines, Sega also reported that the kart racer Sonic And All Stars Racing Transformed was also part of the company’s successful first quarter of the year. The game did much better critically and is seen as a legitimate competitor to games such as Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS.
It’s because of these two titles that Sega reported that their profit is up 54%, which is much-needed good news for the company.
Although Aliens managed to perform better than many may have expected, that hasn’t saved the game from some troubling controversy and unfortunate developments. When the game itself was released, it was said that Gearbox Software didn’t even develop the game in its entirety by themselves. Rather, they were assisted by the recently-shuttered TimeGate Studios, which was only brought to light after the game was initially released.
Futhermore, a class action lawsuit in California accused the game developers of falsely advertising the game to consumers by lying about the game’s overall quality.
Still, this didn’t keep the game from becoming a surprise and much-needed success for Sega as a whole. Brand recognition, friends. Brand. Recognition.
