World of Warcraft Subscription Numbers Down to 8.3 Million
The last time we heard anything about World of Warcraft subscription numbers was back in February. At that time the most popular MMO in the world was sitting at 9.6 million. Since then, the game has dropped 1.3 million subscribers.
While 1.3 million would spell doom for any other MMO out there, World of Warcraft subscription numbers are still insanely strong. That doesn’t mean that Blizzard and/or Activision is sitting pretty and ignoring this, though. 1.3 million is a lot of lost money for a company who was sitting at over 9 million for quite some time.
What we don’t know is exactly where these subscription numbers are dropping from. While the report states that most of the dropped subscriptions came from the east, it doesn’t go into specifics. Are they having issues in China? Or is it a healthy collection of regions from around the world that saw a decline?
Luckily, Blizzard is expected to unveil the next World of Warcraft expansion this year at Blizzcon, which takes place in November. New expansions have historically brought players back in droves to Azeroth and while the past two expansions have soured the experience for some, Pandaria has delivered some of the most exciting content the game has ever had.
Couple this with the possibility of revealing the Diablo 3 expansion and getting a first look at StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void and Blizzard is shaping up to have a very exciting November which should spark a rise in subscription numbers and a better investor call later this year.

Let's be clear, the Chinese gamers ARE NOT SUBSCRIBERS. They buy time-cards from NetEase and play at Internet cafe's. NetEase takes in the money and pays Blizzard a SMALL ROYALTY. At no time do these Chinese players actually 'subscribe' to the game.
It's fairer, and more accurate, to believe the actual subscriber base is under 3-million based on MoP sales.
At one-time, btw, Blizzard used to releases the east and west splits. But then they decided lying about what their actual base was made more marketing sense.
Truth is, it's a big game still. But it's not 8.3 million 'subscribers.' That's just marketing nonsense.
"Pandaria has delivered some of the most exciting content the game has ever had." I believe this is a very opinionated observation." I feel Pandaria has delivered.. etc." would have worked better, because, If it (pandas) has delivered exciting content blizzard wouldn't be down 1.3 million. WotLK was the last "decent" xpac before the mass decline in sub numbers.
@TheBaconAbyss You're right, it is an opinion. However, I also feel that the way Pandaria's content is delivered makes it some of the more exciting content we've had. Blizz is obviously at their peak in terms of what they can do in WoW. They've learned a lot and Pandaria has shown off their mastered skills.
When you look at scenarios, the raids, boss strategies, LFR, and overall enhancements to the game it is hard to deny what Pandaria has done for WoW.
WoW isn't losing subs because of Pandaria. The game itself is getting plenty old and while it is still the most popular MMO out there, there are other games doing unique and fresh things that are attracing people. Plus, Free-2-Play games are starting to take a chunk of the player base.
When I run through things like Throne of Thunder, try to beat out Challenge Modes, and see the upcoming Orgrimmar content I find it to be very exciting. I still think Wrath was the best expansion but Pandaria is doing some great stuff.
@Ron Hoffecker @TheBaconAbyss I was a very big supporter of Pandaria Pre- and Post launch (for a few months) The Pandarian race and Monk class were the first things i dove into. I was really into the new continent and all the Eastern influences that were penetrating the somewhat bland WoW formula. Blizzard found a way to slightly change the blandness by bringing back World PvP and World Bosses and all this new exciting stuff ( make me re-learn how to play a destro lock, which i think happened in Cata, meh w/e) But in the end its still at its core that grind-loot fest that i stopped caring about right before the first raid released. Alot of Pros and Cons for pandaria and WoW as a whole but when you've played passionately for about 3-4 years, multiple end level characters and progression through countless raids, it starts to lose its glimmer now matter what "shinny" object is waving in your face. I also am very interested in the turnout between Garrosh and the Horde. Bleh
