If Amazon France's listing is anything to go by, the Wii U might just be getting a ZombiU sequel soon enough.
Development of the My Little Pony Fighting Game Stopped Thanks to Hasbro
My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic was going to a 2-D fighting game made by Mane6 starring all of your favorite ponies. This was a fan project, so there was no licensing or permission from Hasbro, the creators of the actual television show. It seemed Hasbro was going to be cool with it, as the game was shown at big events like EVO 2012, and there wasn’t a single peep out of the company.
But today Mane6 announced on their website that they received a cease and desist letter from Hasbro, ordering them to stop all production of anything that involves the My Little Pony property. It’s important to note that the makers were planning to make this free to play, and were developing it in their own free time and funding it with their own money.
Although the developers have said they’ve contacted lawyers and are seeking all options, it seems as though this fan made game is all but dead. My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic was also part of EVO 2013′s donation drive to determine its 8th and final game, but was taken out of the running because the developers didn’t want to unnecessarily rush the project. And now it looks like they can’t even continue making the game.
I’m no brony, but that totally sucks. It was a non-profit project that had actual, legitimate fighting game mechanics, and wasn’t just some throwaway flash game. Hasbro seems to be shooting themselves in the foot here too, as a free to play fighting game can do nothing if not increase the public awareness of the television show.
