BioWare Co-Founders Announce Retirement

BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk announced today they are retiring from the gaming industry, and stepping away from the juggernaut development company they formed together in 1995.  Known for RPG gems such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights, BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007.

Announced on BioWare’s blog, the retirement of the legendary developers is quite a surprise.  Two of the most respected names in gaming, Dr. Muzyka and Dr. Zeschuk both game up lucrative jobs in the medical field to try their hand at game development.  As it turned out, they were pretty good at it.  However, the time had come for something new, and with the rapid expansion and commercial success of BioWare, the doctors felt it was time to move on.

“I feel the need now to move on to a new chapter in my career. With the growth of BioWare to multiple locations as part of a public company, following two decades of multiple successful product launches across many platforms and business models, I’ve largely personally achieved what I wanted in videogames; I now desire to take on a brand new entrepreneurial challenge,” Muzyka said in his official statement.  Dr. Zeschuk also had his say on the decision.

BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn had this to say in his official statement:  ‘We – including Ray and Greg – think the studio is solid and the team here is ready to embark on a whole new era of games.”

We certainly wish the best of luck to Dr. Muzyka and Dr. Zeschuk in their new endeavors, and look forward to seeing if BioWare can continue their success without the key leadership they brought to the table.
