Maxis Looking Into Offline Mode for SimCity
The developer of SimCity, Maxis, is looking into an offline mode for the always-online city simulation game. This news comes from the post on their official site.
The aforementioned post is a lengthy one entitled “State of SimCity.” The general manager at Maxis Emeryville, Patrick Buechner, goes over what happened during the games first seven months, which entails the updates that have been added and the games first major expansion, Cities of Tomorrow.
While there is a part of Maxis that takes in player feedback and takes it into consideration, they’ve also decided to start exploring the option of an offline mode. This would likely boost their image in the general gamer eye, as there was a huge outrage over the games requirement to be online at all times to function.
Right now we have a team specifically focused on exploring the possibility of an offline mode. I can’t make any promises on when we will have more information, but we know this is something that many of our players have been asking for. While the server connectivity issues are behind us, we would like to give our players the ability to play even if they choose not to connect. An offline mode would have the additional benefit of providing room to the modding community to experiment without interfering or breaking the multiplayer experience.
Since March 3rd, when SimCity launched, players have tried to force the game to work without being online. They’ve also tried to expand the borders of set cities and just to expand the overall game, trying to prove EA-Maxis wrong with their statement that the game couldn’t run offline. Modders proved after launch that they could get the game working offline, but it worked with limited functionality.
What do you think, would you jump in and buy SimCity when and if an offline mode comes to fruition? Have you already bought and are enjoying it to this day? Comment below!
