Battle Alongside Mega-Evolved Kanto Starters In Pokemon X and Y
During this morning’s Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming Pokemon X and Y games for the Nintendo 3DS, a surprising twist on the classic Pokemon formula was revealed. Normally, players are given a starter Pokemon by the professor of the region or someone close to the professor. In Pokemon X and Y, however, this is not the case. Instead, players will be given one the Kalos starters (Fennekin, Froakie, Chespin) by their friend, while the professor of Kalos allows the player to choose between the first three Pokemon to ever be seen in the series – Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.
This time around, players will be given two starter Pokemon to go through the game with. Unfortunately, this also takes up one-third of the total party size you can have in the game, only allowing for up to four more Pokemon to be used after they have been captured. Possibly as a way to make up for that, Nintendo also revealed that these Kanto starters have a hidden talent – Mega-Evolution. While we have seen Mega-Evolutions for other Pokemon up until now, these examples or perhaps even more special, as they are the Pokemon many players grew up with, and allowing them to Mega-Evolve truly bridges the gap between the old generation of Pokemon and the new one that begins with X and Y. The Mega-Evolved forms of the Kanto starters look appropriately powerful and intimidating. It should be noted that while Nintendo did not reveal whether or not the Kalos starters can Mega-Evolve, one could infer that it is indeed possible, due to the fact that the entire trio of Kanto starters can, as well as Blaziken, a starter from the Hoenn region.
Another note about Mega-Evolutions that was revealed in the Direct is that before players can have their Pokemon undergo these powerful transformations, a few items must be obtained first. First, is the Mega Stone that each individual Pokemon requires to Mega-Evolve. Secondly is an item called the Key Stone, which you yourself as the trainer wears. The Key Stone and the bracelet it is fitted into serve as catalysts that activate the Pokemon’s Mega-Evolution. Not much information is known as to where you acquire these items, although due to the immense power of a Mega-Evolution, they are sure to be hard to find.
