Torment: Tides Of Numenera Announced, Not A Sequel To Planescape: Torment
So the impossible has finally happened. Right next to Legacy of Kain, Donkey Kong Country and a true side-scrolling classic Metroid title, another Torment game seemed ludicrously absurd to hope for. However, today InXile Entertainment formerly announced and Kickstarted their new game, Torment: Tides of Numenera. Surprising and exciting as this announcement is, the more startling news is that Tides of Numenera is not a sequel to Planescape: Torment in any way.
Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric RPG and will take place in Monte Cook’s tabletop RPG setting of Numenera, which has nothing to do with PS:T. Developed with the Unity engine, InXile states the game will be more cerebral than akin to a hack and slash action-RPG. Holding the crown, as it should, the narrative promises to be rich, deep and thematic with the focus on these deep words: “What does one life matter?”
Although Tides of Numenera skips the direct relations of a typical sequel, key players in the concepting and release of PS:T are coming back to help with the new game. To drop a few names, Colin McComb, Monte Cook, Ray Vallese, composer Mark Morgan and, of course, Brian Fargo are all on board. Oh and this little bit from the Kickstarter page is pretty important too:
“We’ll strive to make Torment’s combat system and encounters an engaging and entertaining part of the gameplay. We’ll connect them narratively to the overall story. And, continuing the Torment tradition, we’ll make most if not all combat avoidable.”
It’s clear that InXile is putting itself in an admirable position of bringing back treasures of a past age, especially with its successful Wasteland 2 Kickstarter. PS:T is a tough game to one up though, and with everything InXile is striving to accomplish with Tides of Numenera, let’s just hope the project doesn’t become too ambitious. After all, we don’t want to wait 10 years to play it (although we’d gladly wait). In the meantime, head on over to their page, give it a good hard look and then pledge your life away.
