Nintendo Mobile Classics Is A Smart Move
Nowadays Nintendo’s biggest rivals are Apple, Google, and Microsoft’s Mobile division. Smartphones and tablets have become huge for portable gaming and it’s hard to deny that they’ve taken a bite out of the handheld market space.
Still, I don’t think Nintendo (or Sony, either) has much to worry about. There will always be a need for dedicated handheld gaming devices. This is an area championed by Nintendo. They own the handheld gaming market by a large margin. Sony has done very well catching up as a late comer. However, smartphones and tablets are also doing very well to catch up.
I think Nintendo needs to start thinking about “spreading the wealth”.
Perhaps it’s time to start creating apps for these phones and tablets. Maybe Nintendo should be looking at some easy money grabbers. A lot of their handheld owners also own phones that can game. Why not double dip and offer some choice Nintendo classics on both types of devices?
No one is going to go out and sign a 2-year contract or spend hundreds of dollars on an Android, iOS, or Windows Phone device just because they can play Nintendo classics on them. If they do buy these devices, they already planned to and no one game or series of games will change their mind. After all, signing up for a phone contract is a big deal. It does encompass two years of your time, life, and money.
Nintendo should be looking into starting a series of apps for the big mobile platforms called “Nintendo Mobile Classics”. These apps (or one app used as a hub with in-app purchases being the games themselves) would be old time classics from the NES, GameBoy, and GameBoy Color. These games are the easiest to emulate out of Nintendo’s consoles and wouldn’t be much of a hassle for the company to make, send out, and rake in the cash.
So what games should be released? How about…

- Kirby’s Dreamland
- The Legend of Zelda
- Pokemon Red/Blue
- Pokemon Trading Card Game
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 2
- Super Mario Land
- Super Mario Land 2
- Wario Land
How’s that for a debut? Price these between $1.99 and $4.99 each and you got yourself a viable cashflow there.
People go bonkers for Nintendo classics. The more platforms these games can be played on, the better. Of course, you’re going to have the people who are ticked off that they aren’t on the 3DS’ e-shop yet so perhaps a simultaneous release for the 3DS, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone would be the right path.
This isn’t asking for much. These apps should be easy to make and there is no doubt that Apple would approve them fast and the Android and Windows Phone marketplaces would benefit big time from them.
This is a quick way to boost fan approval, build fan loyalty on other platforms, market your own devices, and make some more money Nintendo. Go ahead and steal this idea. I’m not the first one to come up with it and I won’t be the last. People want this to happen and the small royalty payments aren’t going to make Apple or Google become the kings of handheld gaming. You have nothing to lose from doing this.
