A look back at the 2006 release, Sonic Riders. A very polarizing things, we look at what the game excelled at, while noting how some of the flaws may have led the game to be overlooked.
Party of Sin
The Seven Deadly Sins must renew their contract with Hell each 666 years, but this time around on the fated day, a gang of angels break into Hell and cause the contract to be destroyed. The devil consigns the Sins to a dungeon, from which they decide to escape and thus begins the game Party of Sin. Party of Sin is a platform game that combines combat with solving fiendish puzzles while fending off the armies of Hell, Heaven and Purgatory.
You begin the game as Wrath, a horned warrior who smashes his way through everything. He kind of looks like the Horned Reaper from Dungeon Keeper. The game does a wonderful job of teaching you how to play each Sin when they show up for the first time, and the mechanics of each work very well. Having seven characters to choose from gives you plenty of ways to solve the puzzles that come up on each level, though some pieces are keyed to certain of the Sins, such as the blocks that only Gluttony can move (by swallowing them and then spitting them back up somewhere useful) or the torches that only Envy can light with her laser beam eyes. The gameplay doesn’t ever feel forced or roadblockish despite having to use certain characters for certain tasks. They’re more like tools in a toolbox, you need to use the right one to accomplish your goal. Knowing which Sin can do what is essential for success in the game, though I guess if you’re creative enough you can solve at least some of the puzzles in different ways. All of them can kick ass equally well, though some powers are more useful than others depending on what enemies you’re fighting. I liked that aspect because it meant I could run around as any of the characters until I needed another to become another one, but I felt that maybe some Sins should be weaker in combat than others. My only issue is the WASD keys for movement, which you can’t easily change except by going into the game files. It’s not a big deal, but it’s something that bugs me.
A pretty cool thing is that on the Hell level, the angels and demons fight each other as often as the Sins, so you can let them duke it out and take on the winner if you want. Green and red apples dot the landscape of Hell, Purgatory, Earth and Heaven. The green ones are harder to get, because they work as a way to upgrade the skills of the Sins and to unlock extra content like different costumes or bobble heads for all of the Sins.
The voice acting is great. All the Sins have great lines that are both pertinent to their characters and also pretty damned funny. For example, when Greed kills, he sometimes says “You’re fired.” Gluttony always is hungry and telling the world about it. Envy and Wrath don’t really talk, they just make a bunch of noises, though I’m not sure why Envy can’t talk. Lust seems to be a bit bored with her lines, though maybe that’s intentional. Either way, it still works.
All the characters have looks that are consistent with their sin and also fun to watch run around on the screen.
There’s a co-op mode, which can make life easier because then you don’t have to be constantly switching which Sin you are every three seconds when trying to solve a puzzle.
